Atlanta is really a sports town: Just take a look at our desire for nfl and college football

While our status as supporters of

professional teams is within dispute, there isn’t any denying Atlanta may be the capital of school football. Why? Now you ask , simple to answer.

History (the straightforward kind).

The Deep South didn’t possess a lengthy-term presence inside a major pro league before the 1960s, once the Braves gone to live in town and also the National football league granted us the Falcons. The nearest options were in St. Louis or Washington, D.C. Southerners adapted by treating college programs like pro teams. (It’s no shocker the first compensated college coach was Georgia Tech’s John Heisman.) While New Yorkers had Yankee Stadium, Tech’s Grant Field was the area to appear in Atlanta within the 1940s and 1950s.

History (the complex kind).

The South were built with a rough . . . couple of centuries approximately. Apart from producing superior food and music and manners, our people didn’t ring up lots of wins against other regions-until Alabama won the 1926 Rose Bowl because the first Southern team to become asked to school football’s only bowl game.

We’re proficient at it.

It’s one part passion and something part (bacon-enhanced) produce. You attempt raising 310-pound defensive tackles on the California diet. It simply doesn’t work. For this reason SEC teams overpower teams from elsewhere. Georgia is among football’s most talent-wealthy states, second simply to Florida in delivering senior high school players to Division I college programs. Atlanta may be the recruiting El Dorado Big Ten teams setup shop here simply to spend more time with our prep stars.

Atlanta’s the center of all things Southern.

Pay attention to the mind coaches of each and every team attending college football’s best conference prior to the season starts: All of them say they “want to get at Atlanta” (for that SEC Championship). Because the Southeast’s hub, Atlanta stands because the greatest publish-grad place to go for alumni from most ACC and SEC schools, and there is a horde of massive Ten alums here, too. Our melting pot will get mocked by other Southern metropolitan areas for quartering fans from the Cowboys, Celtics, and Red Sox, however that welcoming quality really boosts our college fandom profile. At the end of August, look lower your street: Chances are good you will see flags, stickers, and shirts celebrating Auburn, Tennessee, Florida, Ohio Condition, Clemson, and particularly the Dawgs. You cannot have that spirit elsewhere.

  1. Can&1quo;t wait for Google Fiber to hit my house in Sandy Springs. DirecTV and Comcast (internet) promos end in June…
I&1quo;m so impatient with this – AT&T just sent me a notice that GigaPower is available (although the website doesn&1quo;t reflect that yet). I wish I knew now if Google Fiber will be available this summer.
