Jennifer Holliday wows crowd with Broadway within the Garden
About halfway through her intimate Broadway within the Garden performance Sunday night in the Atlanta Botanical Garden, Tony and Grammy champion Jennifer Holliday referenced her unique surroundings. “My dressing room has ended where some cultures are increasing!Inches the Dreamgirls icon told the capability crowd collected inside a lavishly decored tent erected around the Great Lawn. “I have no idea what they’re. I’m a Broadway girl. I stored considering Little Shop of Horrors back there!” The Atlanta resident donated her performance Sunday night like a joint fundraising event for Actor’s Express and also the Atlanta Botanical Garden.
With simply a set of canned waters along with a carafe of the warm throat-soothing beverage to help keep her company on stage, Holliday, now 52, dazzled everyone else with some hands-selected songs from her career and also the tales in it. She discussed meeting Broadway great Ethel Merman when she would be a kid while wowing Broadway audiences nightly together with her Act One showstopper And I’m Suggesting I Am Not Going [“Some from the critics were evaluating my moment in Dreamgirls with hers in Gypsy and she or he wanted me to understand she could not agree.”], finding Barbra Streisand after Dreamgirls director Michael Bennett requested her to look at Streisand’s movie musicals to understand movement tips [“I didn’t know who she was. I had been 19. If Aretha Franklin didn’t sing it, I did not realize it.Inches], how she stored her voice fit doing eight performances per week for 4 years on Broadway within the show from 1981 to 1985 [“They wouldn’t allow me to drink, smoke or do drugs. I’d a real drag. But, I’m still alive and that i can continue to sing!”] and her much-noted 200 pound weight reduction and 2nd career as a diet pitchwoman [“I am living hoooongry. Both Jennifers are actually hooongry. But one of these simple Jennifers gets compensated to starve!”].
Holliday received two standing ovations before she even reached her show-closing signature song. Alas, although some fans were on their own ft, one overzealous [and perhaps over offered] admirer sitting lower. On the ground. In heels. In the feet from the stage. And started shooting video of Holliday. Three songs into her YouTube directorial all-nighter, Holliday finally addressed the lady, asking, “Does the digital camera not have access to a flash onto it? I do not actually all taking photos but to record 2 or 3 songs? Seriously.Inches
Blessedly, Atlanta Botanical Garden and Actor’s Express figures crunchers were too tickled through the income flowing set for the 2 nonprofits through the evening in your thoughts. Actor’s Express artistic director Freddie Ashley and AE board chair Bruce Cohen partnered for hosting an evening meal for ten cooked by Ashley in the Vision Qualities president’s Buckhead home. “I can perform not only direct a play, y’all,” Ashley told everyone else. “I can sling some damn hash.” The happy couple wound up auctioning off two dinners for as many as $5,000. A stroll on role in next summer’s AE manufacture of The Rocky Horror Picture Show (you’re able to perform within the Time Warp number, natch) selected $700 and former Decatur mayor Elizabeth Wilson strode to the level herself to detail the Southern cuisine she’ll be whipping up for 10 visitors on her auction item: fried chicken, creamed corn, three vegetables and “sweet, sweet tea.” Wilson wound up selling two dinners for as many as $4,000.
