What’s filming in Atlanta now? Our December update includes The Nice Guys, Ant-Man, and The 5th Wave

We’re back with another batch of production codes, shooting locations, and insight into Yallywood’s biggest projects. You may have seen fewer signs as of late; it is the holiday season, after all, but I assure you, there are movies and TV shows being made out there, and we’ve gathered the info that will keep you in the know. Let us know if you see any more!

For all of our ITP readers, you’ve been seeing a lot of MISTY signs in the last few weeks. That’s the production code for The Nice Guys, starring Ryan Gosling, Matt Bomer, and Russell Crowe. The film’s another period piece shot here (the other being the recently wrapped Bolden!—production code: Cornet). The Nice Guys takes place in 1970s Los Angeles and focuses on a private investigator looking into the apparent suicide of a fading porn star. Of course, in true movieland fashion, things aren’t as simple as they seem. Production started just after last month’s filming update and the crew has been all over town since then. Toward the beginning of November, filming took place near Cumberland Mall and off of Old Powers Ferry Road in Sandy Springs. Just before the Thanksgiving break, the production was spotted in Stone Mountain and Stockbridge. Most recently this past week they were within a few blocks of Peachtree Center, shooting near Baker Street.

The other major productions we’ve been talking about recently: The 5th Wave (code: Sheldrake) and Ant-Man (code: Bigfoot) have shot a cornucopia of footage this month as well. The 5th Wave has begun a complex military base shot at Cobb County Airport—McCollum Field. Signs have been spotted off of 75 and Chastain Road. They’ve also been shooting in North Druid Hills and Ansley Park. Ant-Man, which stars Paul Rudd, showcased a major selling point for filming in Georgia by using Broad Street downtown not only as a backdrop for New York City, but also for San Francisco. They even filmed a big car chase scene on that narrow street in the middle of the month. Before Thanksgiving, they were in Virginia-Highland around John Howell Park. You may have also seen Bigfoot signs up in Lawrenceville around November 11 for shooting at the Gwinnett County Detention Center. This past weekend, the production was at Lake Kedron near its home at Peachtree City’s Pinewood Studios.

Sadly, it seems that we might lose one of our Atlanta productions. Fox’s Red Band Society (Ocean) hasn’t been doing great ratings-wise, and according to this post by On Location Vacations, we might be seeing the beginning of the end. Fox has not ordered more episodes beyond the original run, and the odds aren’t in the show’s favor for a second season pickup. The production filmed at The High Museum of Art on December 1 and on December 4 at Decatur Cemetery . . . uh oh.

This month, Vacation (Stretch 29) wrapped. One of your last chances to see its signs was on November 7 at Six Flags Over Georgia. The Walking Dead (SF) also finished shooting the second half of season five a few weeks ago as well in Senoia. Other familiar Atlanta productions have continued shooting throughout November including Powers (Sic’em) in College Park and downtown, USA’s Complications near Centennial Olympic Park, VH1’s Hindsight (20/20) in Woodruff Park, BET’s The Game (SDS) off of Nelson Street and Walker Street, The Vampire Diaries (LOC) in Morrow, and Constantine (1159) near Piedmont Park. A new production, which we haven’t been able to find a code for yet, The Phenom, just began shooting last week at Coolray Field in Gwinnett County. More on that next month.

And finally, sometimes we’ll get lucky and an old production will come back to town for reshoots. Usually they’ll be closer to the wrap of the production, but sometimes the decision won’t be made until well into the entrenching that is editing. Right after last month’s article, we saw The Duff (DUFF) reshooting a scene near Cumberland Mall. And last week, we found out that Insurgent (Mineral) is coming back to town on December 17 for a reshoot as well. Both of these films are releasing soon—February 20 and March 20 respectively, so don’t expect much from the upcoming filming. After all, Allegiant (ahem, parts 1 and 2) will have to start filming in town in the near future.
