Seth Rogen, Will Reiser discuss their new autobiographical cancer comedy “50/50”
“50/50” screenwriter Will Reiser didn’t need to look far for that inspiration for that new giant screen comedy/drama co-created by his pal Seth Rogen. The video, now in theaters, stars Frederick Gordon-Levitt as Adam, a San antonio public radio producer who is afflicted with a “neurofibroma-sarcoma-schwannoma.” Roughly converted, Adam includes a cancerous tumor how big a little Buick nestled against his spine. It’s a predicament that Rogen, who plays Adam’s best pal Kyle within the film, and Reiser worked within real existence while focusing on HBO’s “Da Ali G Show” when Reiser was presented with a really similar diagnosis.
“When I had been sick, we discussed the thought of a cancer movie,” Reiser recalls while crashed in a conference table alongside Rogen in the Ritz-Carlton Buckhead. “A comedy that felt real and in keeping with the knowledge. However I didn’t really start outlining the film until annually later. I desired to place it within the rearview mirror for any bit. But Seth and [co-producer] Evan Goldberg really advised me to create about this.Inches Reiser even loaned the MRIs of his monstrous tumor for Gordon-Levitt’s character’s hospital scenes. Within the film’s most cringe-worthy sequences, a doc with zero bedside manner spouts out lots of medical jargon to Adam as he’s informing the 27-year-old he’s a existence-threatening tumor. Reiser states he’d several physician such as the one in the script. “But I discovered, the larger the dick the greater the physician,” Reiser states as Rogen’s trademark belly laugh reverberates over the room. Interjects the comic: “You totally wanted that guy to function for you too! I am talking about, if ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ has trained us anything. . .” Adds Reiser: “I had some doctors who have been incredibly nice however i had other people who treated me just like a vehicle set for a optimize.Inches
A lot of the humor in “50/50” left Reiser’s encounters like a cancer patient and understanding that none of his 20-something buddies, Rogen incorporated, understood things to say or do. “We made fun from the situation,” he states. “But it made us understand that there wasn’t any movie available that precisely portrayed what it really was enjoy being youthful and undergo something similar to this. Most cancer movies are actually excessively dramatic, they’re not realistic and also the character is really a curmudgeon or misanthrope that has some big epiphany in the finish and dies. That’s a Hollywood cancer movie.” Adds Rogen: “We only wanted which was Will’s story!”
The film’s impressive cast includes Oscar champion Anjelica Huston, playing Adam’s overprotective mother, Oscar nominee Anna Kendrick as Adam’s adorable counselor and Bryce Dallas Howard, who plays his artist girlfriend who cheats on him while he’s dealing with chemotherapy. Because of the magic of Hollywood release dates, “50/50” is Ron Howard‘s daughter’s follow-up to “The Help,” the summer time hit where she performed racist Hilly Holbrook, who particularly had an outdoors bathroom built on her maid within the film. We requested Rogen and Reiser if they’re whatsoever concerned about snuffing Dallas Howard’s career having a lethal one-two punch of villainous roles. “Right?!” assesses Rogen. “She’s such as the [“Inglourious Basterds” actor] Christoph Waltz from the movie!” Adds Reiser: “I do seem like we type of must find a pleasant part on her now.” Riffs Rogen: “I’m writing a mom Teresa bio pic on her.Inches Counters Reiser: “She’s among the best people you’ll ever meet but she does love playing individuals types of roles. She loves picking apart the psychology of somebody for the reason that position.”
Reiser and Rogen, meanwhile, have described “Up within the Air” Oscar nominee Kendrick because the sunshine of the cancer comedy. “Anna may be the lightness within this film,” states Reiser. Adds Rogen: “That first scene she’s along with Joe in her own office? You are able to really hear a sigh of respite from the crowd. Mostly, I believe it’s the relief of finding that I’m only some of the supporting character within the film.”
